A Decade of Partnership with Un Regalo De Dios

Our next release of the year is another from our longtime producer partner Luis Alberto Balladarez. We have been sourcing coffee from his farm, Un Regalo De Dios, for over a decade, starting with just a 10-bag lot in 2013. This year we had the privilege of purchasing four microlots from Luis, including this year's natural Pacamara microlot from La Peña.

La Peña: High-Elevation Excellence

Finca Un Regalo De Dios is comprised of multiple plots, or "plantíos", based on elevation. The middle section of the farm includes La Peña, located at about 1,500-1,600 meters above sea level. In addition to separating lots by elevation, the farm managers ensure that each variety is picked and sorted carefully, which allows us to have this single variety Pacamara microlot from La Peña.

This is our third release of the season from Un Regalo De Dios in Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua. URDD is divided into different plots, or "plantíos", where many different varieties are grown, La Peña being one of them.

The Pacamara Variety

Pacamara is a variety that originated from a cross between Pacas and Maragogipe varieties, and it has become very popular throughout Central America. This microlot is comprised entirely of Pacamara—a variety often used as competition beans, including by Luis Alberto himself in years past at the Nicaragua Cup of Excellence. We're always thrilled to offer varieties with such unique and exciting flavor profiles, and this coffee is no exception.

Natural Processing at Its Best

This naturally processed coffee is grown at 1,500-1,600 meters above sea level in the mountains of Nueva Segovia. The Pacamara microlot is dried in whole cherry at Luis Alberto's mill in Ocotal, where careful processing brings out a bright tropical profile with a syrupy agave sweetness. Developed by crossing Pacas and Maragogipe varieties, Pacamaras show excellent character in natural processing, offering depth and balance in the cup.

In the cup we're tasting all kinds of tropical flavors - mango, papaya, seared pineapple - and a sweet agave finish. With consistent attention to detail from farm to mill, this coffee highlights both the quality of the Pacamara variety and the unique growing conditions of La Peña.
