New Release: Kenya Endebess Estate Coffee - Volcanic & Vibrant
A Historic Estate in Kenya’s Rift Valley
The Endebess Estate is located in the Northern part of Kenya's Rift Valley in Trans-Nzoia county, near the border of Uganda. As is very typical in Kenya, this lot comes to us from a coffee growing estate - Endebess, which is privately owned, marketed, and exported. Endebess has existed since the 1940s, though it has changed ownership several times during this period.
Community and Sustainability Efforts
The estate was purchased most recently in 2011, and the new owners have worked towards the development of schools and youth programs in the area since the acquisition.
Growing Conditions at High Altitude
On this estate, coffee is grown at 1,600 to 1,800 meters above sea level on approximately 250 hectares. This is a blended lot including many varietals typical of Kenya - SL 28, SL 34, Batian, and Ruiru 11.
Handpicked Cherries and Careful Processing
During the harvest, the cherries are handpicked and then sorted to ensure only the best quality cherries are used and then rinsed in fresh water from the Koitobos River. After this process, the cherries are laid out on drying tables for approximately 21 to 35 days, depending on weather conditions.
Unique Terroir: Volcanic Soils and Forested Hills
Rift Valley contains the Cherang’any Hills and a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active. The Cherang’any Hills are one of Kenya’s five main forests and catchment areas and span three counties, namely Trans-Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot. The Endebess Estate farm is set at the foot of Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya. As a result, the coffee is grown in extremely mineral and nutrient rich volcanic soils, contributing to healthy plants, and by extension, a delicious cup.
Flavor Profile: Bright, Balanced, and Bold
This coffee stood out to us with the bright blackcurrant acidity of a classic Kenya, with deeper notes of molasses and mulled wine, making this a rich, balanced, yet exciting profile.
