Kenya Nyeri AA: A Classic Washed Coffee from the Central Highlands
Kenya Nyeri AA
Grown Between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares
From one of the most distinctive coffee origins we source from, this next release is a perfect representation of Kenya. This particular lot is from the Nyeri region, situated between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains, an area that is known for its ideal geographic and climatic conditions for coffee production. This area is historically the center of Kenya's coffee production due to the rich soil and fresh water moving through the area from the mountains. This region is also home to the Kikuyu people, who have resided between the mountains for centuries.
A County Select Lot from Nyeri
This lot was sourced by Cafe Imports as a part of a program they've developed to import coffee from a specific region that best represents the terroir and qualities of the area. In Kenya, they have Uteuzi Jimbo lots, which is Swahili for "County Select", and this is one of those lots from Nyeri. This washed process coffee is a blend of some common varieties in the area: SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11.
A Return to Washed Process
Last year, we had the opportunity to source a naturally processed Kenya from the Endebess Estate in the Trans-Nzoia region in Western Kenya. As delightful as it was, the roasting team is incredibly stoked to be bringing on a washed Kenya this year. It's a more traditional type of processing in Kenya and highlights a classic, currant-forward flavor profile that is much sought after. In the cup, we're tasting that bright redcurrant profile, in addition to notes of black tea and grapefruit.
