Layo Taraga: A Naturally Processed Gem from Ethiopia’s Guji Zone
A Sought-After Coffee from the Heart of Guji
The Layo Taraga Washing Station is located in the Uraga District of Oromia, within Ethiopia’s famed Guji Zone—a region celebrated for producing some of the country’s most dynamic and complex coffees.
This naturally processed lot showcases heirloom Ethiopian varietals that capture the bright, fruit-forward character and delicate floral essence that Guji coffees are known for. With some of the highest coffee-growing elevations in Ethiopia, this part of the Guji Zone offers ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and exceptional flavor development.
Grown by Smallholder Farmers
As with much of Ethiopia’s coffee production, the Layo Taraga lot represents the combined work of around 500 smallholder farmers. Each cultivates just a few hectares or less, entrusting their harvests to local washing stations like Layo Taraga for processing and export. These collective efforts preserve both the quality and integrity of the region’s unique terroir.
Distinctive Flavor Notes
In the cup, Layo Taraga delivers a stunning balance of sweetness and florality. Expect notes of nectarine and raspberry, layered with jasmine-like aromatics and a creamy, yogurt-like body. It’s an expressive, fruit-forward coffee that beautifully reflects the natural processing and high-elevation origin.
Each cup of Layo Taraga tells the story of 500 smallholder farmers and the lush Guji highlands they call home.
