Welcoming Our First Ethiopian Coffee of the Season
We are pleased to welcome our first Ethiopian coffee to the lineup! This is a brilliant washed coffee from the Banko Gotiti Washing Station in the Gedeb District in Yirgacheffe.
The Banko Gotiti Washing Station receives cherries from approximately 400-700 smallholder farmers living within 2-3 km of the station. On average, these farms average about 2 hectares, with coffee generally cultivated in household garden plots alongside grains and fruit. In addition to the traditional intercropping methods typical of the area, these farms tend to meet most organic standards by default. Farmers very rarely use fertilizers or pesticides, and generally rely on more traditional growing and composting methods, while also taking advantage of the incredible conditions of the area's microclimate to produce these much sought-after lots.

This particular lot has been sourced through Leafy Coffee, a Denver-based importer and distributor of Ethiopian coffees. We had the pleasure of meeting the founder, Kidane Teklu, two years ago and have been very impressed with the coffees he's been importing. Originally from Ethiopia, Kidane graduated from CU Boulder in 2001 and has since worked extensively as a coffee professional across all areas of the supply chain. Thanks to his experience and strong ties to the farming communities in Ethiopia, he's been able to offer us a high level of traceability and insight into the coffee's production.
Last year, we sourced a washed coffee from the Gogogu Washing Station in Guji through Leafy Coffee, and we are pleased to have been able to bring that lot in again for this year, in addition to some exciting new ones! This coffee is a vibrant start to the season with the classic bright citrus and floral notes of Yirgacheffe. In the cup we're tasting lemon and black tea with orange blossoms on the nose.
