Nazareth Robles: The Fourth-Generation Farmer Behind Our Costa Rica Microlot

Continuing a Thriving Partnership

We’re so excited to announce our special release microlot from producer Nazareth Robles. This is our third year in a row working with Nazareth, who is a fourth-generation coffee farmer at her family’s farm in Tarrazú. Working alongside her father, Leonard Robles, Nazareth has proven herself as a dedicated and innovative producer, especially in the realm of coffee processing in Costa Rica.

Innovation at Finca El Balar

At their farm, El Balar, Nazareth has experimented with both washed and honey processing, but in recent years has worked extensively with fermentation and natural processing. The resulting coffees are unique, vibrant, and packed with tropical flavors.

Meticulous Harvest & Processing

As always, this year’s lot was meticulously processed with ripe cherries being harvested from the trees and sorted in floatation tanks that ensure that only the ripest cherries at the correct density are used. Once sorted, the cherries are organized into piles on the patio to ferment for three days, being turned over systematically to ensure the most consistent fermentation possible.

After this, cherries are sent to a static mechanical dryer where consistent warm air is used to dry the cherries. This portion of the process lasts for one week until the now dried cherries are placed in sealed sacks for one month before they are milled.

A Cup Bursting with Tropical Flavors

The resulting coffee is an incredibly sweet and rich experience, with intense tropical flavors. In the cup we’re finding mango, papaya, and rum raisin, with a distinct honey sweetness.

Looking Ahead with Nazareth

Every year we are thrilled with the quality and consistency of Nazareth’s coffee, and look forward to continuing to foster our relationship with her and her family. Lately, in addition to her work in coffee, she has been attending school in San José to study business. We couldn’t be more proud of her and can’t wait to watch her continue to flourish!
