New Release: Burundi Kibingo Natural Process Coffee
A Returning Favorite from Burundi
A returning favorite has just arrived from Burundi — a bright and fruity naturally processed Red Bourbon from the Kibingo Washing Station in Kayanza, a northern province bordering Rwanda. This region lies just 50 miles south of Lake Kivu, an area world-renowned for its perfect coffee-growing environment: high altitude, temperate and humid climate, and rich volcanic soil.
These ideal growing conditions allow the coffee cherry to ripen slowly, developing a complex cup profile with vibrant sweetness and delicate layers of flavor.
Meet the Kibingo Washing Station
The Kibingo Washing Station serves over 1,700 smallholder farmers in the Kayanza region. Beyond processing, the station provides essential resources to its members, including:
- Fertilizer made from composted coffee pulp
- Subsidized seedlings from the community nursery
- Farmer education to support yield improvement and income diversification
This collective model supports both the quality of the coffee and the well-being of the farming communities who grow it.
The Natural Process: Sun-Dried & Carefully Sorted
During harvest, the coffee cherries are handpicked and transported to the washing station. There, they’re floated in small buckets and sorted to remove any damaged or underripe cherries.
Next, they’re moved to raised drying tables and slowly sun-dried over 3–4 weeks. Once fully dried, the coffee is transported to the dry mill for final sorting and processing—ensuring that only the highest quality beans make it into your cup.
Why We Love Kibingo
We've partnered with the Kibingo Washing Station for several years now, and they consistently produce outstanding coffees that earn a place on our menu. This season’s natural lot is no exception.
