A New Pair of Coffees from the Mountains of Nueva Segovia
Our next two featured coffees come to us from the mountains of Nueva Segovia in Nicaragua. Finca Lo Prometido, Spanish for "What Was Promised", is one of several farms owned and managed by renowned producer Luis Alberto Balladarez. The farm is situated in La Cordillera de Dipilto y Jalapa, a mountain range that spans parts of Honduras and northern Nicaragua at about 1,600 meters above sea level.
A Longstanding Relationship with Luis Alberto Balladarez
We have been working with Luis Alberto since 2013, as his attention to detail and quality is absolutely unmatched. In previous years we have purchased lots from two of his other farms—Un Regalo de Dios and Finca La Bendición, where he painstakingly cultivates many varieties—including some Nicaragua Cup of Excellence winners. This is our first year sourcing coffee from Finca Lo Prometido, and both microlots we have selected for our lineup have proven to be just the same caliber.
The Paraiso Variety from Brazil to Central America
Both of our releases from Finca Lo Prometido are of the Paraiso variety—a hybrid originating in Brazil that was developed by crossing Catuai and Timor varieties. Since its development, it has spread to much of Central America due to its productivity and disease resistance, paired with consistently high quality in the cup.
Processing, Traceability, and Quality at the Ocotal Mill
Not only is Luis Alberto the owner and manager of these farms, but he also owns and operates an outstanding mill in the city of Ocotal in Nueva Segovia. This allows for a serious level of traceability and quality control year over year, in addition to the opportunity it gives him to foster continued growth and stronger relationships between producers, exporters, and coffee buyers in the area.
