Story Angles
Looking for your next story? Here are the narratives shaping OZO Coffee Roasters.
The 19-Year Independent
Founded in 2007 by Justin Hartman, OZO Coffee has grown to five Boulder-area cafés through community loyalty and word of mouth, without venture capital or national expansion. Nearly two decades later, the company remains locally owned and operated.
Sustainability with Measurable Impact
In 2025, OZO's Own Cup Program kept 42,250 disposable cups out of landfills. Canister refills prevented 595 pounds of packaging waste, and a housemade milk program eliminated 3,300+ cartons. For OZO, sustainability is tracked and quantified through measurable outcomes.
A Grassroots Growth Model
At a time when many food and beverage brands prioritize aggressive expansion and paid acquisition, OZO has scaled primarily through community connection and reputation. What does sustainable, locally rooted growth look like in today's market?
Sourcing as Long-Term Relationship
OZO builds direct, ongoing relationships with coffee producers to prioritize ethical sourcing, consistent quality, and supply chain transparency. The company maintains direct communication with producing partners across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
Coffee as Community Infrastructure
OZO views its cafés as gathering spaces designed to connect diverse communities. Through wholesale partnerships, neighborhood cafés, and local giving initiatives, the company positions coffee as a vehicle for belonging.
The Rwanda Sholi Partnership
For the past two years, OZO has partnered with the Abateraninkunga ba Sholi Cooperative in Rwanda's Muhanga District to highlight women's leadership in coffee production. In 2025, proceeds from the Rwanda Sholi Women's Lot raised $2,007.21 — funds designated for a beekeeping initiative that resulted in a 265% increase in honey output, helping women farmers build more resilient livelihoods.
Made From Scratch, Intentionally
From small-batch roasting on our Diedrich and Gothot roasters to in-house production of cashew-almond milk, OZO maintains hands-on production practices that many cafés have outsourced, emphasizing craft, control, and quality.
